Nadia Comaneci, (born November 12 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej (now Onesti(born November 12, 1961 in Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej, now One Romania) Romanian gymnast who was the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10 in an Olympic competition. Comaneci was first discovered by Bela Karolyi who was later her Romanian gymnastics instructor when she was just six years old. Her first competition was at the national junior championships of 1969, finishing 13th. She took the title in 1970. Three gold medals were awarded in her debut competition, a junior pre-Olympic meet in 1972, which was a the communist bloc nations. The following year, 1973 as well as 1974, she was the junior all-round champion. When she competed for the first time in senior level, Lyudmila Turkishcheva, a Russian athlete, won five gold medals as well being awarded a silver. The year was 1976 when she was the winner of the American Cup at the New York City Olympics. She also was the first female ever to remove the parallel bars using backwards double salto. In her early years, Carol began as a figure skater for traveling shows Ice Capades with her sister Nina Wayne. Ice Capades showcased performances of skaters ice skating performed by actors.
